Truro Students Counting Down to Performance with Hadfield
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TRURO – Seventy students from Truro Elementary school are “over the moon” with excitement after learning they will be performing with space icon, Chris Hadfield, during his June 25 appearance in Truro.
“The student’s jaws dropped when they were told,” said Belinda Fraser, Director of the Truro Elementary School Choir. “Just meeting him is a dream come true for many people, so singing with him is a moment these children will be able to share for the rest of their lives.”
The choir is made up of students from Grades 2 – 5. They will be singing on stage with Hadfield at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre when he reprises his version of ISS (Is Somebody Singing), a song he performed from the International Space Station by video link with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.
Ms. Fraser said the students followed Hadfield’s adventures in space carefully and are familiar with the song, having already performed it as part of a Music Monday series.
Hadfield has agreed to sign the guitar used in the performance and allow it to be raffled off, with money going to support Feed Nova Scotia. The guitar has been hand-painted by local artist, Duane LeBlanc; and donated by Mingo Music Sales of Truro.
Raffle tickets for the guitar can be purchased at Mingo Music Sales or the night of the No Limits event.
“You can come to the event for the inspirational message and walk out with a guitar played by the most famous Canadian astronaut,” says Dianne Kelderman, President and CEO of the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council. “Who wouldn’t give up a corner of their living room to show off something like that?”
Hadfield will give the keynote speech at the Council’s 65th anniversary celebration, No Limits. The evening also includes presentations by Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to summit Mt. Everest; and California social media guru, Kristen Christian.
In the afternoon before the event, Skreslet will host a private rock climbing pizza party at the Kohler Klimb Wall for fourteen children on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list.
“An opportunity to go rock climbing is beyond the dreams for these children, so to be able to do it and get advice from someone who has scaled the most famous mountain in the world is beyond exciting,” says Big Brothers Big Sister Executive director, Michelle Misner.
