Affordable Housing Initiatives

Building Communities, One Home at a Time

Launched in 2022, the Affordable Housing Initiative is a cornerstone of the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, dignified, and affordable housing across the province.

What began with the transformation of a former motel in New Glasgow into 36 modern housing units has grown into a thriving, multi-site program. We’ve since expanded to include:

  • Renovation of a heritage property in Pictou,

  • Deployment of energy-efficient prefabricated homes,

  • Strategic acquisition of existing buildings across Nova Scotia.

Today, we proudly operate 103 affordable housing units and we’re still growing.

Our Mission

We believe that housing is more than shelter it’s the foundation for stability, well-being, and opportunity. Through innovative partnerships and community led development, our initiative is designed to serve the needs of Nova Scotians urban and rural who face barriers to safe, affordable living spaces.

Program Highlights

  • Active in multiple communities across Nova Scotia

  • Focused on both new builds and adaptive reuse

  • Rooted in co-operative values and local partnerships

  • Locations chosen for long-term community impact

Our developments are guided by local input, sustainability principles, and the goal of keeping people close to the communities they love.
